Fashion / THE WAY WE WORE: XIMENA SARINANA

Ximena Sariñana is hot on our 2012 Artist to Watch list and she should be on yours too! The 26 year old songbird is going to be all over the map this spring starting with SXSW and Coachella. She just released her new single “Echo Park”, and its quirky radness is just the right kind of pop-kitsch we bump straight to the top of our playlist. Want to know more? Read on about Ximena’s weakness for Peter Pan boots and why she thinks of Katy Perry whenever she’s in her closet.

Tell us the trend story behind this old photo.

This [above] photo was taken as a promo picture for my first record. I was fresh out of high school and was all about the girl next door look. The necklace I was wearing was my favorite thing at the time. I was into big, colorful necklaces. I loved these pieces because they made me feel original and playful, and did I mention they were ridiculously comfortable?

Where is the necklace now?
I actually still have both items! I am terrible at throwing things away. I haven’t worn either of them in the longest time. I don’t really miss my necklace. I would feel kind of childish wearing that right now…

What trends did you love in high school?
I really loved the mini with tights look that was really in when I was starting out. I am actually wearing one in the photo. Anything with tights drives me nuts!

Describe your style.
I feel like I’ve grown up more with my style. I am not afraid to wear heels and look more done up than at the time. I like dressing up more than what I used to and I am willing to go out of my comfort zone with my clothes. Although I am still a sucker for Peter Pan boots!

What trends do you love now?
I love high wasted things: skirt, jeans, you name it. I also love suede camel ankle booties. I wear them all the time, especially if they come with a little heel high enough to feel done up, but not to a point you can’t wear them for more than 5 minutes.

What was the first concert you’ve ever been to?
My parents took me to concerts all the time when I was a little girl. I even got to see Ella Fitzgerald when I was 2! The first one I remember was Michael Jackson in Mexico City. I danced the entire time.

If you could write a song to your wardrobe, your closet or a favorite piece of clothing, what would you title it?
I have a love/hate relationship with my wardrobe. Sometimes I love it, sometimes I just can’t find [anything I] want to wear, but then there are those pieces that just have me coming back for more. I think Katy Perry already wrote that one! “Hot ‘n Cold”?

What’s coming up for you in 2012? I have some shows lined up for SXSW, Coachella and some shows in Costa Rica, Japan and Mexico! Then I’m taking some time off to write my next record.

If you could invite anyone to jam with you, who would it be? I think the best jam sessions happen when they aren’t planned. The ideal jam session for me would be at a small jazz club, like the ones I used to play when I was living in Mexico City and doing jazz. I would love to jam with any Beatle, if only John still lived…
