Fashion / Sound Off: 10 Questions with The Colourist
We first heard The Colourist open for Electric Guest at the El Rey, and we have to say…we were instantly smitten. A melding of mellow indie/dance/pop (think Arcade Fire meets the Beach Boys), this Orange County band not only boasts killer jams, but also features an ahhhh-mazing female drummer – which in Girl World translates to…something to obsess over. Completely mesmerized by a total babe who can rock a drum set like nobody’s business, we just had to hunt down drummer/vocalist Maya Tuttle to pick her brain on current trends, ideal super powers and her fav thing about the holidays. This gal is seriously rad.
Describe your sound in 5 words or less: Triumphant indie math pop.
Favorite song on the album: “Wishing Wells”
Most-loved movie quote: “You cannot find peace by avoiding life.” -The Hours
Item in your closet you couldn’t live without: My pleather fanny pack. I’m serious!
90s trend that you’re dying to bring back: Definitely the fanny pack. Utility, comfort, and fashion all securely wrapped around your waist–great for casino floors and theme park visits. I believe the fanny pack is coming back with a vengeance in 2013!
The most tragic of trends: Nothing says “I’m a ‘Try-Hard’ that thinks I’m cooler than everyone else in this room” than wearing sunglasses indoors.
If you could have any super power what would you have? I’d say flying, but that’s everyone’s answer. I’m going to go with super breath: I could freeze things with my zero degree exhale. I would never need ice cubes. I could also create high-force winds with these super lungs. I can’t imagine such powers not coming in handy in a time of need.
All you want this holiday season is: A cat sweater. I would also like a sweater for my cat. If they matched, that would be a bonus.
Fav thing about the holidays: Hanging with my family and watching Golden Girls reruns.
If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing? Filmmaking; or anything that engenders compassion (and spurs action). I’m a sensitive Pisces.
