Fashion / INSIDE THE DIY FILES: 10 QUESTIONS WITH RACHEL FROM THAT’S CHIC
We’ve been crushing on blogger babe Rachel Nguyen from That’s Chic for quite some time now. The OC-raised trendsetter is a newbs to La La Land and has the California-cool vibe on lock, juxtaposing cutting-edge pieces with stellar vintage finds. We were stoked when Rach invited us to her cozy Melrose studio to chat blogger beginnings, denim fixations and festival season must-haves and even collabed a slew of projects for our upcoming SS13 magazine (coming in April)!
Peep her interview below and stay tuned for more Rachel (and a brand new DIY VIDEO SERIES) coming up on the blog!
So what’s your blogger backstory?
I started blogging in high school because I had really strict parents. With blogging, you have an outlet to put all the things that inspire you in it, and you meet people with similar interests!
LA or OC?
I grew up in the “bubble” of Orange County and it was just really cookie cutter – like the modern day Edward Scissorhands – so moving to LA has definitely been a change and I surprisingly fell into it very naturally!
What do you love most about living in LA?
I can just walk to Larchmont to grab some coffee or vegan food or go across the street to Astro Burger and get the juiciest hamburger ever! It’s amazing to be so close to so many things – you have the beach right there, and [you can] go hiking up in Griffith [Park] and go downtown to Culver City. There are just so many great eclectic areas – you just don’t get that in Orange County.
Ok, style question! What’s in your closet?
I started working in denim, so I have a lot of great denim pieces like jackets, dresses, jeans… I’m just kinda stuck in the denim world.
Most prized possession?
Best vintage find?
I found this amazing vintage floral Dior hat at an estate sale the other day – I got it for under $30!! It’s like a piece of art so it’s just hanging in front of my closet right now.
I got my first TV ever, so right now I’m obsessed with anything on Netflix – I always have the Kardashians running, just to have background noise, but right now I’m watching Walking Dead and Breaking Bad. I’m hooked.
It’s almost that time of year again! And since we’re already plotting our music fest looks, tell us…what are your must-haves for festival season?
A sheer kimono that you can just throw on, [to keep you] cool and stylish, and a cute little flower headband!
The name of your blog is That’s Chic – how do you remain chic at a hot, sweaty music festival?
Remaining chic is very hard because you just want to get dirty, you don’t want to care, you just want to listen to your favorite bands! So…I just pack skirts with everything. Skirts instantly jazz up an outfit!
Any festival tips for newbies?
Have a landmark with your friends, in case you guys lose each other. It’s scary when you lose your friends in a sea of people!
