Heywood: A Grilled Cheese Shoppe

3337 W. Sunset Blvd.

This Silver Lake gourmet grilled cheese shoppe, named after a 16^th century writer’s ode to cheese, had us at cheddar. With a Thursday-Saturday late night menu (3 a.m. late enough for ya?) filled with English cheddars, Italian fontinas, crunchy sourdough and lots of vegan and vegetarian options, we could literally spend an entire weekend diving through their cheese case. Oh, and did we mention there is a triple cream brie on the menu? Insides melting.

 Forage

3823 W. Sunset Blvd.

When you’re in the mood for some seasonal, super high quality and down-right delicious farm-to-table cuisine, Forage in Silver Lake has specials that will make you realize that all eats should taste this fresh. Their roasted salmon bowl and awesome avocado sandwich are two items that we order on repeat, but their salmon belly taco special is one we come running for!

Black Hogg

2852 W. Sunset Blvd.

Don’t be fooled by this locale’s name (it actually means “year-old lamb on the farm”) the Black Hogg is more than just a meat lover’s mecca. Well, not that we don’t love their trademark juicy lamb burger or the popcorn bacon (you have to eat it to believe it!) but some of our go-to dishes on the menu are more of the ocean variety. Case in point the Uni Toast or the Grilled Octopus Chana Masala. Come hungry, come all.

Tacos Chapalita

2929 ½ N. Broadway

A stone’s throw away from our Los Angeles headquarters, this Lincoln Heights taco stand (next to the Post Office) can’t be beat when it comes to quick, inexpensive and super delicious classic LA street tacos. Sit on the stools out front to get the authentic Los Angeles experience. If you’re feeling like a taco challenge is in order, walk across the street to King Taco for a sampling of each!

Scoops

712 N. Heliotrope Dr.

If we could dream in ice cream, it would definitely be in buckets of Scoops ice cream. The swirly goodness served up at this Eastside parlor rotates off-the-wall flavors on the daily – like Brown Bread, Blackberry Balsamic and Salted Maple Oreo.  If you want to open up your palette with non-tradish tasty delights, this place is a must-try!  Cone-oisseurs welcome!

 Chroni’s Famous Sandwich Shop

5825 Whittier Blvd.

Even though the name of this shop has the word sandwich in it, you would be fooling yourself to be ordering anything other than the melt-in-your-mouth chili cheese dog. Another LA staple, the humble chili cheese frankfurter here is one of the best in the city (outside of Pink’s in Central LA). Be prepared to go back for seconds.

Tacos Baja

5385 Whittier Blvd.

Want to know where all the locals go when they are craving the best fish taco in LA? Step into line at this Eastside taco resto for yummy fish taco combos (we’re suckers for the Tacos de Baja!), quesadillas chock-full of fresh shrimp, and endless amounts of roasted güero peppers sprinkled with red chili powder. Bonus: get there on a Wednesday and you could earn yourself a fish taco for 99¢ each (not joking). We’ll see you in line.

Griffith Park

4730 Crystal Springs Dr.

This iconic Eastside park is known for its lush hiking trails and its abundance of activities for the kid in our hearts. Stop by the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens, see all the stars at the Griffith Observatory, ride a pony up to the Hollywood Sign (for reals!) or catch your favorite live act at the Greek Theatre. We promise you’ll completely forget about the concrete city around you.

Barnsdall Art Park

4800 Hollywood Blvd.

Gourmet food trucks and free art exhibitions of LA’s emerging talent? Sign us up. We are huge fans of Barnsdall Art Park in Silver Lake  - the perfect spot to have a major chill out sesh with your besties when you’re feeling tired of the Hollywood scene. Make a day of it by hitting vintage-haven Confederacy down the street.

Vintage Vortex V

4516 Hollywood Blvd.

Co-ops may not be new to Los Feliz, but this vintage dreamland is a cut above the rest for a few main reasons. One, its historic digs up the ante (it’s an old saloon). Two, the thrift shop hosts over 20 boutiques in 3 storefronts (that’s a lot of designer duds). And three, lineups on the first Friday of the month include local DJ sets and late-night shopping with your gals.

Broome Street General Store

2912 Rowena Ave.

This all-in-one self-proclaimed mom-and-pop Silver Lake boutique carries a wide selection of globally-sourced treats from home goods, housewares, foodstuffs, fashion finds and collectables. What are even better are their Fried Chicken Fridays and the Brooklyn-staple Gimme Coffee brewed fresh before your eyes. We guarantee you’ll leave with a belly filled with yummy food, completely caffeinated and arms full.

Origami Vinyl

1816 W. Sunset Ave.

This vinyl outlet (and record label) houses the some of the best in punk, indie and new releases this side of paradise. Don’t forget to bring a treat for the in-store pup Ali and stay for free shows from your soon-to-be-favorite indie bands.Check out their blog here for all the deets.

The Echo and Echoplex

1822 W. Sunset Blvd.

Recently celebrating it’s 10^th anniversary, this legendary live music venue in Echo Park showcases both underground acts and old faves. Dance the night away and pretend like you’re onstage in this intimate space and snack on New York-based Two Boots pizza for an epic weekend night.

Echo Park Craft Fair

821 E. 3^rd St.

More than 50 locally-sourced Eastside designers converge on a lush grassy space twice a year to showcase a treasure trove of eclectic homewares, clothing and accessories. Stop by this weekend (at its location near DTLA) May 11^th and 12^th for summer selects.

 Night Gallery

2276 E. 16th St.

The under the radar Night Gallery, located in Lincoln Heights, is definitely one of the more interesting art spaces in Los Angeles (and not only because of the conceptual art housed inside). In its first months of opening one could only visit during the witching hour (literally, 10 p.m. – 2 a.m.), the walls were always painted jet black, and it was more of a hangout space for artists than for any type of commercial venture. Now, you can expect a rotating roster of Los Angeles artists that still represent that quirky spirit of the original space and more decent hours.

LAMILL Coffee Boutique

1636 Silver Lake Blvd.

Essentially serving one of our favorite cups of Joe on the Eastside, this relaxing spot packs a punch when it comes to elaborate beverages with an equally glamorous interior. Curl up in a faux leather chair underneath a glittering chandelier with an orange-infused cappuccino that you’ll order again and again.

The Sweat Spot

3327 Sunset Blvd.

Very often we have the urge to shake our groove thing, and since the office isn’t the best dance studio, we head to The Sweat Spot in Silver Lake. With classes that include ballet, African, hip-hop, jazz and the infamous Sweaty Sundays, adults and kids alike are encouraged to sweat it all out. Check their website for impromptu local dance installations and some sweet merch.

Naturewell

3824 W. Sunset Blvd.

It wouldn’t be a LA city guide without an organic juice bar and Naturewell, sandwiched between Los Feliz and Silver Lake, is on the top of our fresh-squeezed list. For a twist on the old wheat grass classic, try the Purificane with young coconut and raw sugar cane.

Skylight Books

1818 N. Vermont Ave.

Even if book clubs aren’t really your thing, we highly suggest you take a peek into this Los Feliz bookstore that has an incredible selection of both art books and periodicals. We dare you to try and leave without buying anything. Get a little culture in here before getting your fingers sticky at Umami Burger down the street.

The Black Cat

3909 Sunset Blvd.

An important historic landmark on the Eastside of town, this sleek lounge  - complete with ornate chandeliers and dark wood paneling – envelops you in the decadence that makes you feel like you’re back in Gatsby’s era. Sip on some bubbles or a tasty libation and stay for delectable eats like salt cod croquettes and a starter called The Cat Snack. Meow.
