Beauty / DIY: Chalk it up
Speaking of being under a pastel spell, we did this DIY last week at our HQ and are super excited to show it off! Channeling our latest campaign, Charlotte Free for Forever 21, if you’re looking for a quick and easy way to get her pink locks, you’ve found your match! It’s extremely easy and Stephanie (our lovely blonde model) was really excited to have pink flowing through her hair.
Supplies: Soft pastels (can be found at any art supply store), spray bottle, and a flat iron.

Step 1: Separate into small sections of hair
Step 2: Soak a small section of hair with water.
Step 3: Apply whichever pastel color you choose, generously. Repeat throughout sections you want pasteled.
Step 4: Flat iron (or curl) your hair to set the color.
Voila! You’ve just given your self a temporary new hair color! And you may even look a little more like our latest muse, Charlotte Free. #LoveIsFree after all.
It looks really good!
Oh my gosh!!! This is such a easy and simple tutorial! Will this look work on really dark hair as well?
Are you using oil pastels or chalk pastels?
Would this work with brunette hair also?
how long does the colour stay in?
I want this… How can I get it?
Did you just used normal art oil pastels? Or are they special hair pastels?
Yei! cannot wait to try it!
will this work on black hair?
How long does it usually last?
does it work on dark hair colour ?
looks great on the model, however her hair is already blonde which most people would have to use bleach to acheive. So how does it work on dark hair?
Wow!!! This is such a rad idea. Would just hope it doesn’t leave colored residue on your clothing. Can’t wait to try

will curling or straighting your hair not wreck it or make the colour stay , i thaught it was ment to was out ? please write back
if you want to put it in dark hair , you just have to wet it more , and re apply 3 times , it doesnt do damage to your either , thats what i have read on other blogs
So fun! Better than sprays or dyes or wigs.
I wouldnt Do that Cause It Completly Ruins Your Hair
I have dark hair and it works on my hair great
and it lasts up-until you wash it out or u sleep on it…i mean it depends on the color u use for the dark hair but it worked for me
I love this! To those wondering: You should use chalk pastels, and not oil! Oil pastels are, well, oily, and it won’t wash out easily! Also, this does work on darker hair colours too, depending on how stong the pigment is! Just try applying multiple layers of pastel onto your hair! And last, beware, it WILL make quite a mess when putting it on, and also during the day if your hair gets wet!
Can you use normal oil pastels on your hair?
And if you have dark brown hair, what color would show up?
Would the pastels get on your straight iron?
WARNING!!! if you have light hair or highlights, the pink and red pastel dyes WILL NOT wash out!!! it took almost 3 weeks for my pink streaks to wash out! not that I really minded….
I tried this and the chalk came off on my kids clothes and neck. I am not sure what I did wrong. Also came off to touch. Does anyone know how to stop this or what I did wrong. Thank you
Hi there! Try wrapping a towel around their shoulders before attempting. Although the chalk will get on the hands of the person touching it, if you’re using pastels, it will wash of easily. The reason we suggest flat ironing the hair after you’ve put the pastel color on it, is to set the color into the hair to hopefully prevent the color coming off on other clothes. We hope this helps! Let us know if you have any other questions. xo
are you supposed to flat iron your hair right after you put the pastels on it when its wet? and if so could this damage your hair?
