LOCAL CRUSH: THE BUTTERMILK TRUCK
NOVEMBER 19, 2009 | 17:35 PM

Angelenos! Hipsters! Late night club-goers! Track down the Buttermilk Truck, like now. You can thank us later.

Our office recently discovered new realms of happiness when the newly launched Buttermilk Truck showed up at our curb last week. From cake donuts and biscuit breakfast sandwiches to pancake bites and french toast sticks, could it get any better than this? We can attest for the tastiness of these goodies, so can Zagat, and with the truck’s official launch at The Brig on Abbot Kinney last week, hipsters and late night club-goers across LA are now catching on too and the crowds are showing it…

Owner of the truck, twenty-something LA-native Gigi Pascual, is not only adorable, but boasts a Pastry Arts degree from the French Culinary Institute in NYC that packs the punch behind her divine delicacies. Food trucks are all the rage in LA right now, so what better an opportunity than to run her own operation and serve up the most important meals of the day, for morning, noon and night. Oh, and everything on the menu? Crafted from her own, original recipes. I’m telling you Angelenos, this is one trend you should definitely track down and cash in on…

THINGS WE LOVE: MOODY GLAM ART
OCTOBER 22, 2009 | 16:43 PM

Between Halloween quickly approaching and everyone’s current craze for vampires, we’re majorly crushing on this gothic-glam look and can’t wait to bust out all of these rich winter colors from the back of our closets. Definitely feeling inspired by artist Liselotte Watkins’ decorative illustrations and portraiture. Just loving the moody glamour of it all. And the mixing, mashing, clashing patterns? Even better! What do you think? Click the link below to see more of her work.

BIG MAN, BIG TASTE
OCTOBER 6, 2009 | 13:07 PM

The competitive world of Los Angeles confections has a sweet new tastemaker to reckon with… Big time.

Big. Man. Bakes. May sound like a pretty simple concept, but the delicacies that come of this Big Man taste much more complex. William (Chip) Brown, med-school student turned bona fide scientist in the kitchen, left his dreams of practicing medicine behind for a much bigger craving. He’s since set up shop in downtown LA, with 5 simple yet heavenly cupcake creations so awesome they nearly outshine his 6’ 5” inch linebacker stature behind the counter!
The flavor of choice around our office? Carrot cake. And let me tell you. The proof is in the pastry. Shreds of real, organic carrots topped off with fluffy cream cheese frosting and a candied carrot make this one dangerously delicious vegetable.

And who doesn’t adore red velvet? The Big Man’s savory spin on this famous flavor has hints of real cocoa topped with super-smooth frosting, and it sure packs a punch. Another classic, the “old school” flavor, pairs two of the world’s all-time faves—chocolate buttercream frosting on a vanilla cake, but with a hint of almond to top it all off. And chocolate lovers are sure to unite over Big Man’s double chocolate cake confection. Made of a dark, rich base with a luscious Ghirardelli chocolate frosting, this treat brings new worlds of bliss to a chocoholic’s life.

It gets better ladies. If you’re like me and are getting a little sick to your stomach thinking about devouring an entire Big Man cupcake…Opt for the mini-cakes available, with more than half the calories of the big ones. Guilt-free indulgence? Count me in!
Enough of the drooling. Go to the Big Man Bakes website for menu details & directions to his shop downtown. You can thank us later.
